Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Geneva, Switzerland

Start of the 33rd session of the Human Rights Council

This morning the 33rd session of the Human Rights Council (HRC33) - an inter-governmental body within the United Nations system made up of 47 States responsible for the promotion and protection of all human rights around the globe – started with an update by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights mr Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.

He expressed his deep concern about the lack of access to countries for his office and seemingly growing attempts to undermine OHCHR’s work.

The Kingdom of the Netherlands shares the High Commissioner’s concerns and strongly supports his and his office’s work. Human rights are a corner stone of the Dutch foreign policy. Where human rights are flourishing, democracy has better chances. When human rights are under pressure however, oppression and dictatorship lure.

The Netherlands are one of the largest donors of voluntary contributions to the Office of the High Commissioner and are member of the Human Rights Council for the period 2015 – 2017. The Council meets three times per year for multiple weeks, and discusses important issues and country situations.
